NMSU created its first-ever degree program in social welfare in 1970 through the Continuing Education Office and then launched a two-year nursing program in 1972 after a yearlong study found broad support for having a nursing curriculum at NMSU. In 1979, New Mexico State University formally established the College of Health and Social Services (CHSS), the University’s centralized home for the only accredited programs in southern New Mexico for nursing, social work, and public health students. The College of Education at New Mexico State University was founded in 1956 with William B. O’Donnell serving as its first dean. Preparing teachers has been a part of NMSU’s history since the 1800s, with education programming occupying different homes through the years. Educational programs were first housed in the School of Agriculture and in 1929-1930 a distinct Department of Education was created. In 1938 the department passed to the School of Arts & Sciences. The Department of Education and Psychology gained administrative autonomy in 1956 when the Department of Education and Psychology was changed to a School of Teacher Education. The term, College of Teacher Education, was employed when University status was gained in 1957. Minimér

In the early 1960s a pioneering group of medical educators, recruited from across the United States, undertook an audacious experiment. They came together to create a medical school in a state beset by endemic poverty and daunting geographic barriers. Today, New Mexicans are justifiably proud of their School of Medicine, which owes so much to the foresight, vision and courage of those educational pioneers. Over and over, we learn of their fearless questioning of the status quo and their compulsion to ask, "Why?" They are icons to us, but in their day they clearly relished being iconoclasts. Minimér
